Tooth Extractions
Teeth Extractions
At Westchester Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Implantology, Dr. Michael Graffeo and Dr. Christopher Lane are highly skilled in performing tooth extractions, ensuring your experience is as comfortable and seamless as possible. While we always strive to preserve natural teeth whenever feasible, there are times when removing a tooth is necessary to protect your oral health or prepare for further treatment.
Why Are Tooth Extractions Necessary?
Tooth extractions may be recommended for a variety of reasons, including:
- Severe Decay or Damage: When a tooth is too damaged or decayed to be repaired with a filling or crown.
- Infection or Abscess: To prevent the spread of infection when other treatments, like root canals, are not effective.
- Crowding: To create space for orthodontic treatment or when teeth are overcrowded.
- Gum Disease: Advanced periodontal disease can weaken the bone and tissue supporting a tooth, requiring removal.
- Preparation for Dental Implants: In cases where a damaged tooth needs to be replaced with an implant.
Types of Tooth Extractions
There are two main types of extractions, depending on the condition of the tooth:
- Simple Extraction: This procedure is used for teeth that are visible above the gumline and can be removed without making incisions. Local anesthesia is typically used to numb the area for a pain-free experience.
- Surgical Extraction: For teeth that are broken, impacted, or below the gumline, a surgical extraction may be required. This involves making a small incision in the gum tissue and, in some cases, removing surrounding bone to access the tooth. Surgical extractions are often performed under local anesthesia with sedation for added comfort.
What to Expect During Your Tooth Extraction
Drs. Graffeo, Kim and Lane will begin by thoroughly evaluating your oral health using advanced imaging technology to assess the condition of the affected tooth and surrounding structures. On the day of your procedure:
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia will numb the area around the tooth, and sedation options are available for patients who feel anxious or require a more complex extraction.
- Extraction Process: For simple extractions, specialized tools will gently loosen and remove the tooth from its socket. For surgical extractions, incisions may be made to access the tooth before removal.
- Post-Procedure Care: Once the tooth is removed, the site will be cleaned and stitched if necessary. A gauze pad will be placed over the area to control bleeding and promote clot formation.
